Expired License
Learn how to reinstate your inactive Wisconsin real estate license.
An expired license refers to a license that has not been renewed on time, causing it to become inactive. Under Wis. Stat. ยง 452.12(5)(b), licensees with an inactive license cannot practice real estate until they renew it. A license can remain inactive for up to five years without requiring pre-license education or passing the license examination.
To reactivate an inactive license, licensees must complete the continuing education (CE) requirements from the previous biennium, pay the renewal fees, and provide evidence of CE completion to the Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS). If you took CE with the WRA, you can access completion certificates within your WRA account.
In Wisconsin, real estate licensees must complete 18 hours of continuing education every two years. However, completing CE courses alone does not renew a license. To maintain an active license, licensees must also submit the renewal application and fees to the Wisconsin DSPS by December 14 of the even-numbered year.
Renewing WRA membership does not renew a real estate license. License renewal is a separate process handled by the Wisconsin DSPS, not the WRA, which cannot renew your license for you.
