New Brownfields Resource Guide is Available

Wisconsin currently has over 10,000 brownfield properties that suffer from environmental contamination. While most of these properties are located in urban neighborhoods, they are also found in rural areas. Many are located in the most desirable areas of the community, but lie dormant due to the solvents, oils, and other toxins that have been carelessly discarded on the land. These properties have always offered tremendous investment potential, but the financial costs and potential liability associated with the environmental cleanup, in the past, has served as a deterrent.

Over the last few years, governments at all levels have begun to recognize that remediation and revitalization of these sites is vital to the viability of our communities, and numerous programs have been created to encourage their cleanup.

To assist in the redevelopment of brownfield properties, the Wisconsin departments of Commerce and Natural Resources have jointly produced a publication that describes the broad range of grants, loans and tax incentives available to finance these cleanup projects, as well as eligibility criteria, amount of funding available, permitted use of funds and contact information.

The publication is titled Financial Resource Guide for Cleanup & Redevelopment and is available free from the DNR Web Site

Alternatively, you can call the toll-free number (800) 367-6076.
